more than 100 roman catholic diocese from los angeles to orlando are adopting the standards as well. along with a growing list of other private schools, because they recognize the quality of common core and the need to stay competitive. these are by the wages for the the record, these are standards that are developed by states that have come together in our great federalist tradition, around this idea that our standards were too low. and 46 states have embraced this idea. this is not top down driven kind of stuff. i would be the last person to support standards conceived and created by the federal government, irrespective of who the president is on the secretary of education is. so when people tell you that that is the case, it's not true. this has been a long-term effort that is important for us, i think, to create a reality check. and the initiative is voluntary. it does not dictate curriculum for teaching strategies. the federal government jumped into the states bandwagon, not the other way around, and this is something i think is important for us to stay the course. i expectation

about three years after that, in the mid-90s again i got back pain so bad i was in los angeles. i was in a hotel room. i had to go to the bathroom. i had to crawl to get to the bathroom. i came back here, had another mri. wow, still have a bulging disc, but there is this hole down there whirl your nerves go through. that's by laymen terms i am putting it. they said maybe you need to have that thing opened up or something like that. well, i thought about that for a while. and my back pain went away after a while it went away. but every time it would come, i could barely sit, i could barely stand, daily news. i even had a chiropractor, and to my office so i could even get on the airplane. actually it worked. higher per week worked. maybe feel better anyway long enough to get on the airplane. and then in 2004 had another episode and it was really bad and i remember is that a national convention up in boston. i could barely move. in fact i curtailed my duties there. i came back and that was made third mri. i sent them up to the hospital for special surgery to have been like that. i

now, what we see with these ecoregulations is ships that may be coming out of ports such as los angeles or long beach where my colleague from california, who is here on the floor, where she hales from. you've got hundreds of ships coming in and out every day but they -- they are not subject to the same emissions control area. they only need to burn this expensive low-sulfur fuel for a very short time until they're out of the e.c.a. but the problem is when you're traveling along alaska's coast to bring those goods up to our state, you're in an area where our air is pretty clean, our air is very pristine but their entire voyage is within this e.c.a. region region, within this emissions control area. so throughout that entire journaly they're required to burn the lower sulfur, more expensive fuel. now, if this were just going to result in an increase in -- in the price of a ticket to -- or excuse me, increase in cost to the cruise lines or to the freight haulers that come up to the state, it might be one thing. but i think we recognize that the economic reality is every dime that's added t

i was born in los angeles in the '60s and raised by parents who were very liberal. in fact, they had a very unusual romantic intermarriage. they were cautioned not marry, i had a jewish mother and my father was a surfer. and everyone thought at time it was a big deal. now it seems not anything to write home about. we were expose to the social issues in the '60s an my father in particular gave me a reading list when i was as young as nine which including black power literature, "to kill a mockingbird" and alice walker. he didn't know she was in that volume. and we went on many peace marchs and then when we moved to the east coast, i went a quaker school, carolina friends which was progressive but had a women study's curriculum. i was able to start taking women's history in a formal classroom setting but a school that encouraged learning at your own pace. when i was 12, and i was able to sort of pursue the subjects that interested me because i had been, you know, tested and pronounced gifted at an early age. a lot of teachers were very interested in mentoring me and w
